Dating Dilemmas - How Do I Look?

Dating is a pretty tricky proposition these days. There was a time when men were just happy that a girl allowed them to talk to her. It now appears that men have slightly more exacting standards. A male friend of mine recently told me that he didn't like women who wear nail varnish, women with long toenails (we are talking millimetres here), women who wear too much make up, women who don't wear any make up at all, tights with open toed shoes or indeed tights at all and, very importantly, bikini lines have to be porn star perfect. He said all of this with his gut hanging over his trousers, a three-day old beard (not designer) and a spot the size of Cuba on his chin. On speaking to other men, it seems he is not alone in his way of thinking.

What struck me, apart from being guilty of one or two things on the list, is that whilst women are preening before a big night out, some of that preening appears unnecessary and is sometimes downright detrimental to the cause. Whilst we think that ruby red nail varnish is sexy and alluring, your date may be thinking that you are as common as muck, no matter what women's glossies say about the colours of the season. On the other hand, he may not be at all impressed with your more relaxed approach to female body hair.

I was always under the impression, false it would seem, that men didn't take much notice of the specifics of beauty. They knew if you looked nice or not, if they were attracted to you or not but they didn't really realise the hard word that went on in the background. Unfortunately it would seem that they do notice when your eyebrows need some attention and your lip liner is a shade too dark. Scary. There also appears to be a fine line between well-groomed and over-groomed. Some men obviously prefer the more natural look. Unfortunately for us girls, the natural look actually takes longer to achieve than the polished look.

How did men get so fussy when, let's face it, most of them are just ordinary looking? Only a handful of men have faces like Brad Pitt and even fewer have the torso. I look around at my friends on a night out in their new outfits, painted nails, glossy hair and then look at their men who have obviously found it an effort to put on a different top over the jeans they have been wearing all day. Are there really so few men out there that they can demand perfect partners whilst being so much less than perfect themselves?

Of course there are exceptions. Notably another friend of mine who showers and changes his clothes at least three times a day and goes to the barbers once a week, where the obliging stylist merely waves the scissors over his head without cutting a strand of hair for three out of four visits. If your own grooming habits are as exacting as this then you are fully justified in expecting the same perfection in your mate. But let's be honest, when was the last time your man had any of his hairs ripped out at the root (on purpose) or spent an hour having hard skin sheared off his feet before feeling able to don his summer sandals?

Modern Man seems to be setting the bar so high that a girl has to be in a constant state of tweezer alert. And yet, what do we expect from them in return? To shower regularly, not to scratch their manly bits in polite company and not to dress like their dads. It hardly seems like equality to me. And how dare they complain when we spend so much time in the bathroom. The blame lies entirely with them. I would, of course, have pointed out the unfairness of the situation to my male friend but I had a fairly lengthy appointment at the beauty salon...

Namaqualand - Must See South Africa.

The land of the Nama is the Creators playground, a land of mystery, magic and contrasts where the indescribable beauty has been molded by an unforgiving climate.

Namakwa is truly a land of contrasts. For the major part of each year this seemingly arid expanse of sunbaked, sandy plains and granite mountains hides a wondrous secret. With the first rains in early winter, these dry lands are transformed into a kaleidoscope of brilliant colour in spring. Daisies, perennial herbs, aloes, lilies and a host of other species create a tapestry of indigenous spring flowers which are unparalleled anywhere. Adapting to a climate defying all life, they survive and thrive in a beautiful land of blistering extremes.

After the wonderful rainfall this winter the veld has come alive, with some species making showings for the first time in many a season. The fields are looking the best they have for many, many years. Water is oozing out of the mountains with fountains flowing at full strength again and the whole countryside is lush and green. Many of the fields already have acres and of wild flowers especially in the Namaqua National Park and Goegap Nature Reserve.

Namaqualanders are confident that the flower season of 2006 will equal the very best they have ever had. It is anticipated that the best time of year will be towards the end of July and last until the end of August. Hopefully more rain will fall which will extend the wondrous carpet of colour until September 2006, but this cannot be guaranteed. Remember that no two visits to this magical land are ever the same (especially in springtime) and it becomes exciting to hunt for the ever-new flower spectacles in different places on each successive visit, even in the same season.

What to do for a when planning your Flower Escapade:

Flowers are best viewed from 11:00 to 15:00 on a sunny day.

It is no use whatsoever to set off early in the morning! Most flowers will only open at temperatures of 17 degrees or higher. If is a cold overcast of rainy day, they will not open at all.

Allow for extra traveling time.

Do not plan your trip according to the distance in kilometers. Always ask a local person how long it will take for you to reach a certain place then add a couple of hours viewing time.

Always stand with your back to the sun, or drive with the sun behind you the flowers always face the sun.

Stop frequently.

Get out of the vehicle and take leisurely walks in the veldt yes you can still do it safely in Namaqualand. Most of the flowers are so tiny that you wont be able to see and appreciate them from a moving vehicle. Most of those fields of daisies only occur in soil distributed by man or animals and it is really quite unnatural.

Always have extra drinking water and refreshments in the vehicle.

If you are in a town, re-fuel. Also have a good map on hand and if possible ask for the best and most scenic route to your destination.

The towns in Namaqualand are few and far between with cell phone reception sometimes only nearby or in the towns.

It is always a good idea to pack an on-the-go lunch.

The Namaqualanders are friendly, helpful and always knowledgeable about the whereabouts of the best flowers. Please dont be afraid to ask!

Montana Glacier National Park

A historic landmark with plenty of activities for all ages, Glacier Montana National Park is comprised of roughly 1.4 million acres of wonderful wilderness land in the western United States. Open year round, a full range of park services are available from late May through September, and limited service is available off season.

The park was established in the late 1890's with visitors arriving at West Glacier (formerly known as Belton) by train. Since no roads existed at that time in the mountainous region, sightseers would then continue traveling by stagecoach for several miles to Lake McDonald. Then they continued by boat to the Snyder Hotel, an approximate 8-mile trip.

The region became a Forest Preserve in 1900, open to mining and homesteading. However in 1910, after efforts of explorer George Bird Grinnell and others to further help protect the area, President Taft signed a bill establishing Glacier as the country's 10th national park.

Glacier Montana National Park Facts

Enrich your education with these facts about the area:

- Archaeological surveys found evidence of humans in this area dating back more than 10,000 years.

- Various Indian tribes inhabited the area; the Blackfeet Indians (east), Salish and Kootenai Indians (west).

- The Lewis and Clark Expedition came within 50 miles of this park in 1806.

- The railroad over Marias Pass was completed in 1891; the Great Northern Railway resulted in homesteaders settling small towns developing.

- Aggressive mining efforts resulted in the mountains east of the Continental Divide being taken from the Blackfeet in 1895. However, no large copper or gold deposits were ever located, as evidenced by abandoned mine shafts throughout the park today.

- Wildlife in the area today includes: big horn sheep, black and grizzly bears, endangered bald eagles, moose, mountain goats, mule & whitetail deer, wapiti, (elk) and wolves.

- Glacier Montana National Park began as sediments deposited in an ancient sea that slowly hardened into thick layers of limestone, mudstone, and sandstone.

- Most of the rocks that visitors see in the park today are sedimentary rocks from the Proterozoic age that were deposited from 1,600 to 800 million years ago.

A historic land, in Glacier Montana National Park visitors can visit all types of rock formations, beautiful mountain scenery and wildlife, many sacred spiritual sites of former inhabitants; ie the Blackfoot and Kootenai Indian tribes. And travelers can check out the more than 50 glaciers in the park, over 200 lakes or streams and enjoy more than 730 miles of hiking trails, where glacier and travel go hand in hand.

Isle of Wight History

Beakers, Romans, Saxons & Danes

Around 1900 BC the Beaker people arrived - so called from their distinctive pottery. They called the Island Wiht (weight) meaning raised or what rises over the sea. Then the Romans arrived in 43 AD and translated Wiht into the name Vectis from the Latin veho meaning lifting.

The Roman rule started under Vespasian and continued peacefully for over four hundred years. Then followed a period of strife starting with the Saxons under Cerdic and Cynric in 530 AD. Many of the natives were slaughtered and four years after Cerdic's death the government was divided between his two nephews Stuf and Wihtgar. In 544 Wihtgar died and was buried at Carisbrooke. In 661 AD, Wight changed hands again when it was taken by Wulfhure, King of the Mercians, but it was in 686 AD that the West Saxon King, Caedwalla, conquered it and brought Christianity to the Island.

For two centuries the people of Wight then led a fairly peaceful life until the Danes arrived this far south. In 897 AD their visits for 'burning and killing' went on for over 100 years so the Islanders lived in constant fear.

The Middle Ages

At the time of the Norman Conquest, William the Conqueror granted overlordship of the Isle of Wight to his relative William FitzOsbern who began the construction of a castle at Carisbrooke. The lordship of the Island passed to the De Redvers family in 1101, with the hereditary rights and privileges that accompanied it, until the Countess Isabella De Fortibus, the last survivor in the family, sold the Island to Edward 1 in 1293 for six thousand marks.

The acquisition of full control of the Island by the crown was important because the Island's vulnerability to invasion. The lordship of the Island was now a royal appointment. One of the lords of the Island - Henry Beauchamp, Duke of Warwick - was actually given a title of King to the Isle of Wight in 1444 by Henry V1, who attended the ceremony and placed the crown on his head.

During the Hundred Years' War, the Island, like much of the south coast, became a target for marauding French. The Island's only fortification, the Norman Castle at Carisbrooke, assumed a defence role for which it was unsuited owing to its central position; The French could land on the coast and burn and plunder while ignoring the castle. Towns and villages like Yarmouth, Newtown and Newport were sometimes attacked and burned. It is said that in 1377 a party of French fell into an ambush on the outskirts of Newport and were cut to pieces in Dead Man's Lane, now Trafalgar Road. They are supposed to be buried at 'Noddies Hill', now known as Nodehill or Upper St. James' Street. On the same occasion the French besieged the castle, but, according to the legend, retired on the death of their commander, shot from the castle's west wall. Concern about the French attacks is shown in the frequent modifications made to the Castle's defences in the 14th Century.

Tudor & Stuart Period

The strategic importance of the Island increased with the development of Portsmouth as a permanent naval base. Henry VIII accordingly built additional fortifications on the island at Yarmouth, East & West Cowes and Sandown, sometimes re-using stone from dissolved monasteries as building material. Sir Richard Worsley, Captain of the Island at this time, successfully commanded the resistance to the last of the French attacks in 1545, at the time of the loss of the Mary Rose.

During the reign of Elizabeth 1, the Island was again threatened by invasion, this time from Spain. Sir George Carey, cousin of the Queen and Captain of the Island, took up residence at Carisbrooke Castle in 1583 and undertook repairs to the defences. Although the Armada was defeated in 1588, the Spanish threat remained, and the outer fortifications of Carisbrooke Castle were built between 1597 and 1602 in response to the invasion scare.

At the outset of the Civil War in 1642, the Parliament assumed control of the Island and retained their control throughout the conflict. In spite of this, King Charles 1 went to the Island on escaping from imprisonment at Hampton Court in November 1647. As a prisoner at Carisbrooke Castle, the King made several unsuccessful attempts to escape before being transferred to Newport in September 1648, where abortive negotiations with Parliament (known as the Treaty of Newport) took place. In November, the King was seized by the Army and taken to Hurst Castle and then to his trial and execution in London.

Recent Isle of Wight History

In the nineteenth century the Island was transformed by the coming of the railways. Queen Victoria took advantage of the island's new accessibility by using Osborne as her retreat. Affairs of the state soon followed her and the modestly furnished family home had to be enhanced with apartments where she could receive foreign heads of state. However, her children enjoyed many hours and a great deal of freedom at Osborne as a visit to Swiss Cottage will indicate. Queen Victoria's affection for Osborne added to the Island's attractions of climate and scenery, and Ryde, Sandown, Shanklin & Ventnor expanded from fishing villages to fashionable resorts.

Queen Victoria's youngest daughter, Princess Beatrice, succeeded her husband, Prince Henry of Battenburg as Governor of the Island in 1896, and regularly used Carisbrooke Castle as her summer residence. After her death in 1944 the office was left vacant until, at the request of the Island, a new Governor was appointed in 1957 - the seventh Duke of Wellington. He was succeeded in 1965 by Admiral of the Fleet, the Earl Mountbatten of Burma, a great nephew of Princess Beatrice. When the Island gained full County status under the Local Government Act in 1972, Earl Mountbatten was appointed the Island's first Lord Lieutenant as well. Since his death in Ireland in 1979, the Island has been without a governor.

Home Security Systems

When choosing a home security system, its important to know that not all systems are created equal. Each company offers various features and has a different track record. Before signing a contract with a company, you should know that you are getting the features that best suit your purposes. The main reason that people choose to have security systems installed is to prevent and deter thieves from getting into your home and your valuables.

As mentioned, there are many features available nowadays. The basic element of a home security system is a trigger that will alert the security company and the authorities when triggered. There are usually several trigger points that you can choose to protect. The main ones are the front and back doors. The second would be the windows. Since most break-ins occur on the first level, these are the most crucial areas to cover. However, it can happen that an intruder will gain entry through a second floor window.

The time elapsed from when a sensor is triggered to the signal going out to the security company is critical. It needs to be long enough to allow the homeowner to turn it off when entering their home, yet short enough that the authorities can take action in enough time. Another important factor is the sensitivity of the triggers. If there are too many false alarms, the response time from the police will be longer. You want to be sure that the system is reliable and that help will come when needed.

Wireless security systems are also more widely available. These systems use your PC or phone wires to send the alert of a break-in. If there is an intruder, the signal is sent wirelessly to the security company. There is even the option of using email to send an alert. Also, instead of tying up home phone lines, cellular phones can be used to send instead.

Most home security system are modular, meaning you can purchase a basic set up and add features as you feel they are needed. Since most companies charge a monthly fee, it may be smart to go this route and pay for only what you truly need. Lastly, before hiring any company to install a security system, make sure that they are licensed to do the job and check their company history. How accurate is their response time? Check their track record; how many thefts have their systems prevented or deterred? When it comes to your homes security and familys safety, you want to rest easy knowing that youre well protected and that youve done everything you can to ensure their safe keeping.

40 Boxcars and Their Different Types

Modelers of HO trains model after specific railroad periods of the United States and Canada. From almost the onset of American railroads the 40 foot boxcar has been in existence. It began to disappear from the railroads in the 1960s.

Refrigeration was changing from the old ice method to the modern thermal air-condition cars that were self cooling. Also, the 40 footer was beginning to be too small. The larger 50 & 60 footers were taking over and they even experimented with 86 foot boxcars. The big railroads wanted to haul more goods and reduce the tonnage they had to haul. It took 125 40 foot boxcars to equal 100 50 foot boxcars. The reduction would be 25 less 40 foot boxcars times their empty gross wait.

This was certainly an advantage for the railroads let alone the maintenance of the smaller boxcar. With this in mind the majority of the model railroaders I know still prefer the 40 foot boxcar. They like the era from the late 1920s though the early 1960s. They are also very colorful and interesting. Many of these nostalgic colorfully designed boxcars are gone unless they might be in a railroad museum. There were so many different designs and logos to see.

The hobbyist still has the opportunity to find many of these colorful boxcars that are manufactured by several model railroad producers of freight cars. Some examples are Kadee, Intermountain, Athearn/Athearn Genesis, Accurail, Bachmann, Walthers, Red Caboose, Bowser, Roundhouse (Roundhouse is now makes only the pre twentieth century cars), Branchline, Life-Like, etc. There are several more that sell kit form freight cars as do some of the aforementioned companies. You can even get wood kits but they are not common.

Now for the types of 40 foot boxcars there are more than you may possibly think. The types of construction and usage varied. It all depended where the railroad was mainly located and types of products, food and perishables that were being shipped. From perishables, staples (wheat, Corn, Barley, Soy, etc.), equipment that needed to be enclosed, parts, manufacturing equipment that was relative small and the manufacturer did not want the tools and or equipment dinged by flying debris, ice, snow and heavy rain, and typical Midwestern hail storms.

Typically soft goods like flour, sugar, fruit, dairy products, and processed meats were hauled in 40 foot reefers. These boxcars are smaller in size than the standard 40 footer. The majority of these reefers were wood as were most of the other types of 40 foot boxcars. This changed however, as time went on to metal reefers.

There are multiple types of 40 foot steel boxcars. There are the following types:

40 Superior Door Boxcar; 40 Double Door Boxcar; 40 Ribbed Boxcar; 40 Modern Boxcar; 40 Express Boxcar; 1937 AAR 40 Boxcar; 40 12 Panel Boxcar; 40 AAR Modified Boxcar; 40 PS-1 Boxcar; 40 Boxcar w/Youngstown Doors; 40 Double-Door Boxcar; 40 High-Cube Boxcar; 40 Ribbed Boxcar; 40 Steel Boxcar w/6 Panel Doors; 40 Steel & Wood Ice Bunker Reefers; 40 Steel & Wood Boxcar. This includes several types of 40 stock cars.

In all they all had a specific purpose for the railroad as well as the user. Many of the reefers were labeled with the name of the product and producer of the goods being carried. There was Rath Black Hawk Meats, Swift, Carnation Dairy Products, Needham Meats, and major carriers such as Pacific Fruit Express. The Pacific Fruit Express Company (PFE) owned the largest number of reefer cars of any of the different reefer users. Union Pacific owned the second largest number of PFE reefers and pulled more reefers than any other railroad during that period of the 40 Boxcar/Reefer era.

As time has gone on the boxcar has almost disappeared from the railroads. However, the need for boxcars has now become critical. The Piggy Back and Double Stack Containers is not necessarily the means needed for some goods. The boxcar may indeed have a come back on the railroads of today.

To Co-sign or Not to Co-sign for Family...That Is the Question

Those of you who recently filed bankruptcy (and those bad credit scores) may be tempted, like I was, to ask a friend, parent or relative to co-sign on a loan with you.

Don't do it.

It weakens your position with lenders. Once a lender sees a co-signer on one of your loansthe lender will question your stability and move into cover their butt mode. And the way lenders cover their butts, is by forcing you to get a co-signer on your next loan...and the loan after that...and the loan after that.

Bottom line: When you have an existing co-signed loanthe chance of a lender requiring a co-signer on your next loan increases significantly.

There are right ways to recover from bankruptcy (or just rebuild bad credit) properly and quickly. But having a co-signer only delays your recovery and sets you up for complications along the way.

If you are unable to qualify for the credit you need...take it as a sign that it is not meant to be...until you can qualify on your own.

What if you are asked to become a co-signer?

I have a core belief...and it goes something like this, Lend people money only if you can afford not to get it back and you won't hold a grudge if you don'tbut never ever lend people your credit.

If you're thinking about co-signing for someone...

Don't do it.

There is too much at stake.

If the borrower defaults on the loan, two things will happen to your credit reports and FICO credit scores:

1. If the loan goes into default, the lender looks to you to make the payment(s)...so have your checkbook ready.

2. Each time the loan becomes 30 days past due, a late payment will appear on your credit report(s) for up to 7 years...and as a result your credit scores will be lower than they could be.

Additionally, when you co-sign...

1. The payment you co-signed for is calculated in your debt-to-income ratio. So going in debt for someone else could actually prevent you from getting the credit you need when you need it. And it could increase the cost of credit since your scores may be lower.

2. When each lender reviews your credit report(s) to consider the loan, they will post a credit inquiry that will lower your credit scores.

3. Your own credit card interest rates could skyrocket due to the added debt. In what is becoming more common practice, credit card issuers are reviewing your credit reports and looking for how much debt you have with other companies. This is called a universal review of your credit reports and if the outcome is bad, your interest rates can dramatically increase with little notice (this just happened to one of my employees last week).

4. The added debt could lower your insurance credit scores to the point where it could impact your ability to get or keep homeowner's and auto insurance or cause your premiums to increase.

As you can see, there is very little value in co-signing a loan. But there is a lot of downside risk.

And these days your credit score is about more than just your ability to obtain credit...it's about your insurance rates and almost everything else in your financial life.

Co-signing for family members

I can remember stories about my family members asking our Uncle David to co-sign. I should know, I was one of them.

What I noticed is that after one family member asked Uncle David to co-sign...all the other family members deemed it their birthright to do the same. Whether it was for a car, motorcycle, camera equipment, or business loans...Uncle David was (and still is) there to the rescue. (Does your family have an Uncle David?)

To a lot of my family, Uncle David turned into Uncle David Bank and Trust, Inc. The sad fact is many family members took advantage of his kindness. Some only paid him back after they passed away. Many times he was left high and dry, making the payments for the borrower.

It's a tough balance to be kind to others, even family members, and remain financially responsible. But one thing I know, I never...never... never...loan someone my credit by co-signing. It's just too risky.

What about co-signing for your children?

If you can easily afford your insurance rates to double, your credit card limits to be reduced, and your interest rates on your revolving credit to increase substantially, then go ahead and do it.

Not me.

I feel it's better to do other things to help your children establish credit.

When my wife and I have children, our plan is to show our kids how to accomplish their credit goals without a co-signer. Will we help them? Sure we will. But not by co-signing. By the time they need to purchase their first car, their credit scores alone will qualify them.

We plan to teach them about the importance of managing their credit and credit scores so they are able to reach and maintain high credit scores; save for a down payment using money they earn (not borrow); and how to compare and select a lender to work with.

What about having a spouse co-sign on a loan?

Well, that isn't co-signing. That's co-borrowing...a different animal altogether. Co-borrowing is common practice among married people on a loan for a car or mortgage. And there is nothing wrong with co-borrowing. The goal, however, would be not to have everything held together. You need to build individual and joint credit so you can weather a storm (i.e., death, serious illness, etc.) on your own if need be.

I only recommend co-borrowing with a responsible spouse. And if you're not married I would even go so far as to suggest reviewing your partner's FICO credit scores! (Should we call this a FICO Pre-Nup?) Consider me paranoid. A person's credit history tends to leave clues. If the clues unearth a trail of bad credit...don't be naive.

Small Business Ideas & Goals

When you're setting goals for your small business ideas, you really create your future in advance. You write down your goals, and mentally prepare yourself to do what ever it takes to realize them.

The first step is to define your goal. You have to get clarity of :

Exactly what you want

When you want it

Why you want it

Now, there you have your goal. And it's very important that you make it detailed and specified. If you're not absolutely clear about what your goal is, you can't commit to it.

It will not be enough to keep your small business goal in your head. You have to write it down, try to make a picture with words, the more vivid your goal is the more effective it will be.

The Dukes Of Hazzard (Season 1) DVD Review

In the late 70's and early 80's, television viewers fell in love with The Dukes of Hazzard, a weekly foray into the fictional setting of Hazzard County, Georgia. Cousins Bo and Luke Duke (John Schneider and Tom Wopat) spent each episode trying to do good, while the loveable Boss Hogg (Sorrell Booke) concocted various schemes for making money and having the Duke boys, who always foiled his plans, thrown in jail for violating their probation (the result of a deal with the federal government to end the centuries-old Duke family tradition of bootlegging).

Joining Bo and Luke are their Uncle Jesse (Denver Pyle), a grandfatherly figure who owns the family farm, and Cousin Daisy (Catherine Bach), whose skimpy shorts coined the cultural term daisy dukes. Along with Crazy Cooter (Ben Jones), the local mechanic, they create a formidable threat to the money-making shenanigans of Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane (James Best) and the owner of seemingly every business entity in Hazzard County, J.D. Boss Hogg. But critics will argue that the true star of the show was the General Lee, Bo and Lukes bright orange Dodge race car with the Confederate flag pasted on its roof

The Dukes of Hazzard DVD offers a number of famous episodes, including the series premiere One-Armed Bandits, source of the video clips that would appear in the opening sequence of the show for much of its duration. Other notable episodes include High Octane in which Jesse Duke outsmarts Boss and Roscoe in his quest to win the governments alternative fuel contest, and Route 7-11 in which Bo and Luke unwittingly become part of an illegal gambling ring until Jesse comes to save the day. Also included on the first season Dukes of Hazzard DVD are The 20th Anniversary Hazzard County Barbecue documentary including John Schneider and Catherine Bach, Dukes Driving 101: A High-Octane Salute including interviews with professional racecar drivers, and The Dukes of Hazzard: Return of the General Lee video game preview

Dusting Off A Dream: Writing Success At Any Age

Give me a stock clerk with a goal and I'll give you a man who will make history. Give me a man with no goals and I'll give you a stock clerk. - J.C. Penney

Country recording artist Tim McGraw confided in an interview that there was a guy at a 7-11 that could sing him under a table. So, why is that guy serving up Slurpees while Tim is performing to packed stadiums?

The reason is the same for writers as it is for singers. There are many incredibly gifted writers who will never have a book published. The reasons are many, but it often comes down to their willingness to follow a dream or to shelve the dream for other reasons some noble and some steeped in fear.

The young do not know enough to be prudent, and therefore they attempt the impossible -- and achieve it, generation after generation. - Pearl S. Buck

There is something about the idea of writing without fear. The dreams we may have once had do not need to remain a simple reference point for what ifs and mighta beens.

The good news about writing is that the more real-life experiences you have the more you may be able to relate. It is never too late to pick up a pen and began to compose something extraordinary.

Sometimes the only thing that will set you apart from a better writer is simply your willingness to write then share it with others.

"Self-trust is the first secret of success." - Ralph Waldo Emerson

The noble art of writing allows a wordsmith to venture into the hearts of humanity and welcome others to the exploration. Unlike certain other entertainment fields, becoming an author is something that can and is done at any age.

He has achieved success
who has lived well,
laughed often, and loved much;
who has enjoyed the trust of pure women,
the respect of intelligent men
and the love of little children;
who has filled his niche and accomplished his task;
who has left the world better than he found it
whether by an improved poppy,
a perfect poem, or a rescued soul;
who has never lacked appreciation of Earth's beauty
or failed to express it;
who has always looked for the best in others
and given them the best he had;
whose life was an inspiration;
whose memory a benediction.

Perhaps its time to dust off a dream.

Credit Card Types And How To Know The Best For You

Choosing the right credit card is a decision thats more important and difficult to make than most people think. With the right credit card, youll be able to maximize your card benefits without getting into debt.

Credit Card Types Which One Suits You Best?

Low Interest Credit Card If youre interested in having a credit card only so you can pay for emergency expenses when you run out of cash, this is the best type of card for you.

Reward Credit Card Every time you swipe your credit card, you get to enjoy an equivalent number of points depending on how much youve spent. The points youve accumulated can later be on exchanged for various prizes.

Airline Miles Credit Card This is a type of reward credit card that offers only airline miles as rewards. When you use this credit card to purchase your plane fare, youll be able to enjoy reward miles. Later on, youll be able to use them and get discounted plane fare or fly for free even! The same rule applies for gas credit cards.

Student Credit Card Credit card companies have lately been designing credit card offers exclusively for students. Although accompanied with higher interest rates, these cards often have funky designs and offer special reward programs developed primarily to provide maximum enjoyment for students. Proof of schooling is often required. It helps if youre enrolled in an accredited school and youve got great grades.

Secured Credit Card If youve got bad credit, theres still a chance for you to own a credit cardbut only if youre okay with having a secured one. This type of credit card requires you to make a deposit on your bank account and serves as collateral in the event that you fail to pay off your credit card debt. Your credit card limit may equal or be more than the amount youve deposited.

Prepaid Credit Card This isnt a credit card per se, but it generally works like one. The limit of this card will depend on how much youve deposited in its account. You cant spend more than what youve deposited. Its main difference with a secured credit card is that secured credit cards can have greater card limits beyond the value of its deposit.

Business Credit Card This works just like any other conventional credit card only with a few additional perks that make it extremely suitable for business use. A business credit card can automatically separate personal expenses from business expenditures, facilitating monthly tallies for your taxes. It can also provide expense reports for your business, special rewards for your business, and allow you to provide supplementary cards for your employees. You can also choose to modify the credit limit of your employees if necessary.

Home-Secured Credit Card This works like a secured credit card, but only this time youre using your home as collateral. If you dont get to pay off your credit card debt, you know what will happen to your home, dont you?

Charity Credit Card Think of it as shopping for a cause. Every time you purchase something using your credit card, a small amount of your money will be donated to the charity being sponsored by the credit card company. This is a great way to salve your conscience if you feel guilty about your materialistic tendencies.

Online Marketing Success Is Within You

Your mind controls your life! The more positive you are the greater success you will have in your life, career or online marketing business. Try to focus on being around and taking to positive people everyday. You will be amazed at the outcome of a positive mind and what position it will put you in.

Have you ever wondered why some people seem to have every thing they touch turn to gold, but when others touch it, things just fall apart.

Lets take a quick look at learning how to succeed at the the things you want the most.

Its all in the way you look at life! What do I mean? Well it just like the saying is the glass half full or half empty

You can take any situation in life and look at it in two ways. Half full (being positive) or half empty (being negative). Its all in the way our mind processes and perceives the information being fed to it. This is done by hearing, visualizing, and thinking.

Lets take the exact same opportunity, circumstance and positioning and give it to two people. They are equal in every way except for their mindset, the out come will always be different.

Who is going to win, the one that thinks he(she) can or the one that is defeated before even trying.

Which is the one you would want, half full of course. This means that more can still go in. You learn from every situation, use the knowledge you gain as a stepping stone and keep trying to get that cup full. These people will have success in life,

If you run in the half empty mode, this makes you feel like youre loosing or have already lost, so why keep trying. These people will have very little success in their life, or in network marketing. They will always be wondering why things do not work out for them.

Remember the childrens story, The Little Engine that Could. How did he make it? It was always by believing I think I can, I think I can, and putting forth the effort to get there. If you do not remember the story please read it again.

We try to teach our children this concept but tends to get lost to some of us in the process of life. Instead of thinking you cant, think you can. Believe In Yourself!

Where Do The Rich Colours Of Autumn Come From ?

Here in England, Autumn is now definitely upon us. Whilst the days have been beautifully warm and mellow, the nights feel cold and damp, and the evenings are drawing in, becoming darker earlier and earlier Although perhaps not as spectacular as a New England Fall, Autumn in Great Britain is beautiful, colourful and special The rich and vibrant hues of bright purple, flame red, brilliant orange, gold and yellow produce a blaze of fire through Halloween and Bonfire Night until late into Autumn and the onset of winter.

Have you ever stopped to wonder what causes this magnificent display?

The answer lies in the physiology of plants and trees.

The change in colour from the lush green leaves of summer to the rich autumnal colours is caused by the cessation in production of food or chlorophyll.

Leaves owe their green colour to the presence of chlorophyll. As the level of chlorophyll drops, other pigments already present in the leaf are revealed. Although photosynthesis has slowed down, sugars are still being produced but the lower temperatures also result in their transport around the plant becoming slower.

These sugars are converted into anthocyanins wnich cause the vivid bronze and red colours. Anthocyanin production is increased by light,so the clearer, bright days of autumn together with the slowing down of the plant's transport system leads to an accumulation of anthocyanin in the leaf. We see the effect of this in the vivid rich autumn leaf display. The cold but frost-free nights of Autumn enhance this intense foliage colour by delaying leaf fall and so reducing the rate of loss of sugar removal along with the leaf. More sugar in the leaf means more anthocyanin produced and more red brown colours.

As well as admiring the beauty of Autumn, we gardeners have lots of practical work to do in the garden. It is a busy time. The gardening we do now in the mellow Fall conditions will pay dividends later. Staying Safe In Car Technology to Keep You Safe

We hear a lot about safety nowadays and rightly so. Hardly a day goes by without, us members of the general public being exposed to one photographic horror story after another about carnage on our roads. Now this article is not meant to act as a criticism for any of these campaigns, I think actually they serve an immensely useful purpose but it would appear possibly that we perhaps spend an inordinate time on external factors and ignore in car factors when it comes to safety.

If we take a look at safety kit for cars than there are possibly several different types off the safety kit and technology that are worth looking at.

Firstly, traction and stability control. Well folks it goes without saying best way to survive an accident is to try and avoid having it in the first place. Sounds common sense? Of course it does in this case, we are thinking in terms of all traction and stability control. Traction control is there in cars to assist us when things go all pear-shaped on slippery surfaces about stability control, also known as ESP actually goes further. It is almost a case off the car taking complete control. It does this by comparing and analyzing the path and the direction that the car is moving in whilst under control off the driver and if there is a major discrepancy between the two, what do you know the car takes over and slows the car by breaking one or more wheels, reducing engine power or any combination of the two.

The second piece of technology that is worth looking at off breaking aids. By this I mean anti-lock breaks which are now standard on new cars. The ease use a system which in turn uses a series of sensors to prevent the cars wheels locking out or up or under breaking leading to a skid. Basically they enable a driver to continue steering and remain in control of the car while breaking hard in an incident and not losing control of the car.

Next we look at adaptive cruise control. The best cruise control management systems in cars dont just help you maintain a constant speed without any pressure from you on the accelerator and they can also analyze the distances between you and the car in front meaning that if you come too close to the caught in front the system will immediately slow the speed of your call to compensate and maintain the correct distance between you and the car in front. Get this; there are some systems that even talk to the driver. Wow thats all we need is a car that talks back.

The thing that you have to remember with all of these technological systems is that they calmed completely prevent accidents but what they can do is reduce the severity of those accidents.

You will find that while a human remains in control or has a controlling influence on the control of a car quite honestly there is always the possibility of something random happening no matter how experienced or how good the driver is.

All you can try and do is try and minimize the effects and that is what some of these systems do.

Residential Crime Prevention Starts With Taking The Proper Steps To Secure The Outside Of Your Home.

Common sense dictates us to lock our doors at night and when we are away from home, but residential crime prevention comes in many other shapes and sizes. Effective residential crime prevention depends on everything from properly fitted doors to stopping your mail delivery when away on vacation.

The Basics

Residential crime prevention starts with taking the proper steps to secure the outside of your home. Basic residential crime prevention measures include installing outside floodlights, keeping your yard clutter free, pruning shrubbery so it doesn't hide windows and doors and cutting tree limbs back from upper-level windows.

Not every intrusion can be prevented. Knowing what to do when faced with different situations not only protects your possessions but can save your life. Ask all service and delivery people for proper photo identification, do not enter your home if something looks questionable, such as a broken window, opened door, or slit screen and leave your home immediately if you suspect someone is breaking into your home, and if you can't leave safely, lock yourself in a room and call 911.

Doors and Locks

Burglars, on average, spend no more than 60 seconds trying to gain access to a home. Installing proper doors and locks on your home makes breaking in more difficult and often deters burglars. The following guidelines for doors and locks significantly improve residential crime prevention: install solid wood or metal doors, fit each exterior door with properly fitted dead bolts, do not rely on knob locks or door chains; they are easily broken, secure sliding glass doors with commercial grade locks or place a sturdy dowel in the door track and never hide keys around the outside of your home; instead give a spare to a trustworthy neighbor.

Alarm Systems

An alarm system installed in your home, especially if you live in a secluded area or high-crime neighborhood, can provide needed residential crime prevention. To achieve effective residential crime prevention, you first need to evaluate your home's needs. Your home's location and surroundings determine the level of residential crime prevention you need.

Did You Know?

German Shepherds were among the first dogs trained for police work- beginning around 1900 in Ghent, Belgium.

Dogs body cells contain the most pairs of chromosomes (heredity- carrying structures) of any mammal- 39 pairs.

There is an old Chinese belief that if a person owns a good and faithful dog that the dog will sacrifice itself to Death when Death demands a member of its immediate family.

The most decorated U.S. dog during World War II was a German Shepherd/Husky/ Collie mix named Chips. He also served as a guard dog in North America and later earned a Silver Star for capturing a machine gun nest during the invasion of Sicily.

Dogs have been used to determine whether twins are identical or fraternal because identicals have the same scent, but fraternals do not, no matter how much they may look alike.

The Latin word for faithful is Fido? Could this possibly have any connection with the fact that so many dogs are named this?

If an old or sick dog does not shake itself after getting up that this is a sign of bad overall health? Each dog shakes itself to get every muscle and tendon back into perfect place after waking up.

A dog can survey an area between 200 to 270 degrees, depending on the shape of its skull and the positioning of its eyes, compared to the average of 100 degrees for a human being.

Due to the popularity of lap dogs in ancient Rome, Julius Caesar once mused if Roman women had ceased to have children in lieu of their new four-legged companions.

Microsoft Dynamics GP Business Portal 10.0 opening the door

It was not a big secret, that former versions of Business Portal for Great Plains, such as 3.0 and 2.5 had limitations in allowing you, software developer to modify existing business portal applications, such as HR & Employee Self Service, Order Management, Requisition Management. With version 10.0 BP enables you to use Web Services for Microsoft Dynamics GP backoffice integration. In the past, not sure if somebody used this techniques you could create ASPX .Net application in Visual Studio 2005 (C# OR vb.NET), where you interact with GP database and object via eConnect and then integrate this .Net application into MS Dynamics GP Business Portal. This approach would have certain known restrictions, however to some extent it should be considered as doing its job.

Business Portal highlights. For those, who are new to BP implementation:

* Requisition Management. This module is successor of former eRequisition. Requisition Management is now BP module and you have to purchase Business Portal user licenses to get sufficient number of RM users (about $40 per user)

* HR & Employee self service. If you have concerns of cost of mailing payroll checks direct deposit info to your employees BP does the job by secured web lookup via Employee Self Service module

* Notifications. Email notifications were lagging competition in BP 3.0, we need to further research 10.0. Competitors, Ariett for instance were offering notification in HTML format with hyperlink to the Requisition Approval (in the case of ReqNet module) for decision maker, allowing her/him to bypass the necessity to login into ReqNet through Active Directory security realm

India Your Global Home for Medical Tourism

Standardization has become vital in the medical world. Professional organizations, non-governmental agencies, and other international institutions work to make sure that medical training, practices and medical equipments are standardized around the world. Medications from prescription drugs to anesthesia are globally available.

Medical tourism is taking advantage of this standardization. Doctors from the developing countries - many of whom have been trained in the US, Canada or UK or a member of any international medical association assure their patients that they will get the same quality treatment as they would get at home, if not better.

India is the most sought after medical tourism destination in the world and much of the credit goes to the Indian doctors on account of their global knowledge on hospital management. India offers characteristically high level of medical tourism, which means that patients coming from abroad enjoy medical care and experiences that are higher than or comparable to standards in their home countries. Another attraction, which drives patients to India, is low-cost treatment. It is estimated that treatment costs in India start at around a tenth of the price of analogous procedures in the United States or UK. Most of the Indian doctors are well educated or practiced in the West; so they are expert in their fields. In many of the developed countries people have to wait for a long period to undergo any sort of surgery. Hence, these countries have developed links with India for fast and low cost treatment for their nationals. The Indian Government has also committed some incentives like fast-track visa for foreign patients.

For patients who are reluctant to travel abroad for treatment, getting a package deal online with various medical tourism service providers would not be a bad idea. This allows you to calculate how much you can save if you get your treatment done in India. No costs are incurred for getting a quote or medical advise over email.

India is developing herself into a competitive market in medical tourism and many experts credit this expansion to its global scope. Indian medical facilities are designed to meet the expectations of world-class tourism. No wonder, medical tourism in India is basking in glorious sunshine today!

Cruise Travel For Physical Fitness Or A Spa Vacation

You really want to take a cruise but you also really want to go to a spa for physical fitness and maybe a little pampering. In the world today you can do both. Years ago you were lucky to find a spa on a cruise ship. If there was one, it was in a really remote area of the ship. As for physical fitness there was very little equipment and most of it was tired. When people started to become more conscious of their looks and health the cruise lines revised their way of thinking. Cruise travel now can double as a spa vacation as well as learning a new physical fitness program.

The newer cruise ships have gone to great lengths to accommodate the cruise passenger who also wants to beautify and tone up. The cruise lines have installed state of the art equipment, added numerous exercise classes, and offer the newest beauty treatments available. Many of the cruise lines have relocated their fitness centers to the top decks of the ships with lots of windows so you can have a view while you are on the treadmill, bike, or lifting weights. Tucked up into the corner is a big TV so you can watch the news from back home. The cruise ships now have three distinct areas, one for fitness, one for spa treatments and one for the beauty salon.

As mentioned, the fitness centers on cruise ships are now a thing to behold. They all will definitely have treadmills, Stairmasters, free weights rowing machines and bikes. Some cruise lines even have complete Nautilus machines. Popular exercise machines, especially on sea days, may require you to sign up for a particular time of day and will limit the amount of time you can use the machine.

If you want to use your cruise travel as a vehicle to start an exercise regime there are physical trainers onboard. Their services, however, will cost you extra. The trainer will ask you lots of questions about your health and diet and then will come up with a personal regime for you. He or she will then book times through the week for you to work together.

All cruise lines offer exercise classes, yoga, aerobics, dance, water aerobics, even Pilates and kickboxing. Some of these may require a slight fee. To find out when these classes are held consult your daily bulletin for times and fees, if any.

Now, you're thinking why would I start a physical fitness regime while on a cruise ship, especially since they serve all that food, 24 hours a day? Well along with the newer, shinier and better facilities the cruise lines have also instituted what they call spa cuisine. Everyday they will offer a "lighter side" menu if you are really serious about you new physical fitness regime.

Don't assume that if the ship is older, it won't have a decent fitness and spa area. Check with your cruise travel agent to find out what facilities are onboard the cruise ship you have chosen. For instance, the QE2 is an older ship but it has a beautifully outfitted spa with a large staff. Celebrity's slight older Century has a Thalassotherapy pool for their passenger's enjoyment and it has become quite popular among their cruisers.

When you board your cruise ship go to the spa area. Usually on the first day the staff will be explaining their treatments and occasionally demonstrate how it is done. Sometimes they will raffle off treatments, so go to the demonstration just for that reason. If you have definitely decided that you will be doing some treatments, book them on day one to get the best times. Any beauty salon appointments should be made then too, hair appointments for formal night go very quickly.

Many times the spa and beauty staff will discount their services on days when the ship is in port. If you are going to a few cruise destinations that you have previously visited, take advantage of these offers. You will find that you can pick your time of day to get these treatments done with little or no competition. If you are an early riser, choose an appointment in the morning and then get off the ship to enjoy that port. Or, conversely, disembark early to explore your new port, and then return to the ship in the early afternoon to take advantage of a discounted treatment.

When you go to your spa appointment, do not wear jewelry or fancy clothes. Most treatments are a bit messy and you don't want to ruin any of your belongings. It is best just to wear a robe. When you get there an attendant will give you a towel and a private locker to put away your things. You may then be asked to wait in a room. Your technician will come out to take you to the room designated for that particular application. You will also fill out a form on your health and any surgeries that you have had. The room you are in will most likely have a shower. It will definitely have a sound system to play soothing music and there will be an array of exotic oils and creams.

The cruise ship spas have gotten quite creative. They now offer couples massages where you and your partner are in the same room with different massage therapists. Then there are four hand massages where two people work on you at the same time. Some of the cruise lines offer in suite massages and some even have massages on the deck.

By far the highest percentage of staff are women but there a few men. If you have a preference between male or female spa technicians, state it when you make your appointment. Some people are uncomfortable lying naked on a table with a therapist of the opposite sex. Check the cruise ships policy on tipping. Some cruise lines automatically tack on a 15% charge to your bill while on others you may have to pay in cash. To save embarrassment, check at the time you make your appointments.

There are three lines that allow you to make your spa appoints before boarding the ship. Princess, Windstar and Celebrity all offer this option. In some cases they even have packages that you can book in advance. Be careful here though, they may give you some very early morning appointments which means you have to go and change them on the very first day. This is not the best policy since they should be giving you prime appointments for booking ahead.

Beauty salons will offer a full array of services. You can have your nails done, your hair colored or hand and foot treatments aside from just a trim. Most of the beauty salons have Europeans staffs. That is not necessarily a bad thing. Places like Austria require their beauty students to go to the equivalent of our college.

See, it is possible to turn your cruise into a spa vacation or physical fitness week. Just follow what your trainer or your beauty technicians tell you and eat the spa cuisine. You've just achieved three goals, a little bit of pampering, a fitness regime, and a light and healthy diet. This may be a new way for you to view cruise travel.

Brokers or Lenders Which Do You Want for Your Real Estate Mortgage?

A mortgage is a mortgage is a mortgage. NOT! Not only do mortgages differ between lenders, but they also differ greatly by the lenders, themselves. There are two types of real estate originators brokers and loan officers.

Brokers generally are self-employed professionals, who work to secure a real estate loan for you. They work through a variety of lenders and earn a fee for the transaction. Most of the mortgage lenders who advertise on the Internet are brokers.

Loan officers are employees of a bank, credit union, or other lending institution, such as a mortgage company. They sell and process mortgages and other loans only for their employers. They are usually local and in a physical location.

There are advantages and disadvantages in using both brokers and loan officers for your real estate purchase, so you need to shop for the one that is right for you and your particular circumstance.

Brokers

The advantages to using a mortgage broker for your real estate purchase are many. Usually, the better deal they get for you, the buyer, the more they are paid on the transaction a big plus for you. If your local bank, mortgage company, or credit union has refused you a loan, a mortgage broker may be able to find a lender, even if you have bad credit just expect to pay a higher interest rate. If your real estate is unique or commercial property, using a mortgage broker to secure a loan is at times easier and faster.

One downside of using a mortgage broker is that your mortgage loan will be sold to another lender immediately after closing. Another is that brokers choose to do either non-conforming loans, which are higher risk and usually higher interest rates, or conforming loans. This limits your loan options. Brokers do not have to disclose a good faith estimate on what closing costs will be, nor are they regulated by the Fair Credit Act. Additionally, they seldom have a physical office with employees offering you face-to-face customer service, and they generally are in another town or state than where your real estate is located. This means they may not understand the local market in which you purchased your real estate. Important issues may arise from the real estate classifications and terms used by your appraiser, for example.

Loan Officers

Though loan officers offer a variety in the types of loans available, you are limited to only those products offered by one institution. Usually a local institution, the loan officer will be familiar with all local regulations and issues will not arise over lack of knowledge in local market terminology.

Banks and Mortgage Companies

Bank and mortgage company loan officers will give you face-to-face customer services, at least before the closing. Like brokers, banks have the option of selling real estate loans on the secondary market. Some banks sell only low-end mortgages or those that require too much servicing with little return. Some sell the loan but keep the servicing portion, making it appear that your mortgage continues to be owned by the bank or mortgage company. They are required, however, to tell you during the initial paperwork if your mortgage may be sold. I suggest you ask before you ever get to that point, if this is a deal breaker for you.

Bank and mortgage company loan officers are licensed and must meet certain criteria. They have more criteria that you must meet, as well, in order to secure a loan (banks usually require the most). Many real estate buyers are refused mortgage loans by these institutions. Both banks and mortgage companies generally do offer better rates and terms. They also must disclose a good faith estimate on what closing costs will be, and they are regulated and audited under the Fair Credit Act.

Credit Unions

You must be a member of a credit union to apply for a loan with them. Many credit unions do not offer real estate loans. The major advantage of securing a loan from a credit union is that they pass on only actual costs of the loan to you no broker fees or commissions. They also never sell their loans on the secondary market, they always are local, and give you continuing face-to-face customer service.

What to Do

The time to begin looking for a mortgage lender is before you begin looking at real estate. Ask family and friends for referrals, as well as their experience with the real estate lender. Ask your real estate agent for referrals. Then, contact each prospective lender and ask questions lots of questions! Compare interest rates, terms, after the closing mortgage sale policies, and what criteria do they require that you meet in order to qualify for a real estate loan.

If you are a residential real estate buyer, consider getting pre-approved for a loan. You will know exactly what you can afford to buy, which usually turns out to be much more than you expect.

Spend as much time shopping for a mortgage lender as you will for your real estate. The deal you get can save or cost you thousands or even millions over the life of the mortgage. Get the best deal possible, as well as the right lender for your real estate purchase.

Overview of Istanbul's Transportation Network for Travelers

Istanbul has a well-established transportation network with bus routes reaching almost everywhere, trains from both Asia and Europe making it into the very city center, boats and ferries along the Bosphorus, a clean and fast subway although it only serves a route with limited stations. Yellow cabs are easy to find almost everywhere in the city and they are not expensive at all. They all charge using a meter and it does not cost much to ride cabs around the city unless the distance is really long. However, some taxi drivers are known to turn the ride into a thrill or a speed race which is not really fun unless you are late for your flight. Tipping is not necessary at the cabs but you can round up to the next lira. You do not have to leave any extra cash after that. The traffic, however, tends to slow down a lot or almost stop at many intersections during the rush hours. The city center, however, has a lot to offer so this might be the ideal time of the day to take a walk around and discover the city.

On most of the popular routes, it is possible to take a shared cab which is called Dolmus. They are slightly bigger than cabs and they are yellow as well. The sign on the top reads Dolmus instead of Taksi . Most of them have a seating capacity of approximately 10 people and they charge a flat fee along the route. You can take the city ferry to ply over the Bosporus in all directions from one continent to another. One of the best ways to explore Istanbul is to do so on water. That is really a sight while you will have the advantage of paying nothing more than a regular transportation charge. For a short trip from the European side, just hop on a ferry to Uskudar and you can be back in an hour.

If you are planning on riding the ferry, the bus or the subway, it is advisable to purchase akbil which is a pre-paid electronic chip embedded on a plastic similar to a key fob. You can use your pre-paid credit on the Akbil and you will have access to citys transportation network with just a tap. There is always a direct bus service between the airports and Taksim. Taksim is the center of the transportation network, with buses, subways and dolmus' coming in from various destinations of the city. Taksim bus stop and the central subway station is only a few minutes from where Hotel Lamartine is located.

If you will arrive Istanbul by car, your safest option will be to park it in a parking lot and take advantage of other transportation opportunities during your stay. For a western driver, Istanbul's traffic can prove to be really difficult to navigate in, the streets can get complicated and the local drivers sometimes may not be patient enough to show enough respect to slower drivers.

Great daytrips from Tenerife - Spain

Regardless of your reasons for visiting Tenerife, you will want to explore the island. As nice as basking in the sunshine is on any visit to this remarkable island, a trip here is not complete without taking a break from the beaches and making the most of the attractions and diverse landscape. By far the best way to ensure you experience all that you can on the island is to take daytrips.

It is true that the landscape on Tenerife is like nowhere else on earth. Numerous attractions await every visitor and the real beauty of it is that given its size, nothing is very far away. The highlights include Puerto de la Cruz, the second city of the island; the famous statue of the Black Virgin Madona and the majestic Mount Teide volcano, towering over Tenerife at 12,200 feet.

Being the most popular of the Canary Islands, some think that overcrowding would be a problem. On the contrary, you will have the whole coastline to choose from to find a suitable resort or hotel. Each area has something different to offer: Los Cristianos has a picturesque harbour and quiet atmosphere; Puerto de la Cruz offers real Tenerife culture, while Playa de la Amricas is home to some of the best beaches on the island along with the liveliest nightlife. Where ever you choose to locate yourself, the choice is vast ranging from upmarket luxury to comfortable mid-range options.

As you would imagine, Tenerife is easy to navigate given its small size. You can either rent a car or use the well integrated bus system to visit the sights on daytrips or alternatively, you can make use of the many travel agents dotted around the tourist areas who will take care of planning daytrips for you.

A great way to ensure you make the most of your stay on Tenerife is to work around the island seeing the attractions. Get a birds eye view of the island by climbing to the top of Europes highest mountain or take the easy route via the cable car at Pico del Teide to the top and enjoy the view. Alternatively, visit Loro Park, home to 340 different species of parrots, or explore the busy port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Given Tenerife is surrounded by crystal clear waters, snorkelling, scuba diving and swimming are extremely popular activities for those who want to explore the underwater world of tropical fish and coral. Other off-island activities which are perfect for daytrips include glass bottomed boat trips, adrenaline pumping game fishing or exciting whale and dolphin watching.

From the airport in the south of the island, an aerial daytrip is a must. An experienced helicopter pilot can take you on a tour of the island, flying over highlights such as Los Cristianos, Playa del Amricas golf courses, and then heading out over the highest cliffs in Europe at Los Gigantes. If you are really lucky, you may see whales coming up for air when the flight takes you between Tenerife and La Gomera.

The island of La Gomera makes another great daytrip, reachable via a short ferry journey. Once on the smaller island, the main highlight is the Garajonay National Park which is made up of over 10,000 acres hiding a laurel forest in the middle. This daytrip can prove to be absolutely magical as the mist descends over the park when the Atlantic winds mix with the warmer island air.

For animal lovers, Tenerife provides suitable daytrip activities such as Loro Park, just outside Puerto de la Cruz and home to an aquarium, dolphin shows, jaguars, gorillas and parrots. If you are not satisfied with this daytrip then combine it with a trip to Tenerife Zoo to see the monkey park and the informative camel breeding centre.

Another interesting daytrip means leaving the island of Tenerife and heading to another of the Canary Islands: Lanzarote. It is possible to do this in a day and it will give you a chance to explore some of the highlights of the neighbouring island. Lanzarote is however another destination in its own right.

Travel writer Andy Burrows will not easily forget his three months lasting holiday on Tenerife as each day on the island he fully enjoyed.
